Project

To replace an old conservatory with a sunroom on a 2 story semi detached home in Dublin. The clients needed an all year round room that could be opened up and integrated into the kitchen. This would create a much needed living room for their family because the existing conservatory was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. The clients wanted to maximise light while at the same time they wanted a warm cosy room that could be used in the winter. They requested that the new sunroom would not darken down the inner kitchen as they were used to the brightness of the conservatory.

Challenge

To create a new bright space/ living room that would at the same time keep the light and brightness in the home and to create a contemporary design that would look aesthetically pleasing on the home. This new room would be open-plan from the existing kitchen.

Design Solution

We designed a square Hip roof sunroom design with 4 roof windows for maximum light. We suggested the conservatory and the base to be totally removed because we had doubts about the insulation in the existing base and we wanted to change the shape of the base to suit a more contemporary rectangular shape. The clients chose pine for the finish on the inside of the roof windows for a lovely timber effect. We recommended white outside and white inside for the sunroom to blend in with the existing house windows. We recommended using 100mm insulated plasterboard on all the external walls,100mm of insulation in the floor, and 150mm of spray foam insulation in the ceiling for a cosy room in the winter months.

Build

The existing conservatory and the base was first removed. A new radiator was extended from the existing central heating system. We discussed with the client what type of flooring they would install onto the new floor and they decided on tiles, with this information we ensured that the new concrete floor was laid at the perfect level so when the clients laid their floor the new floor would be at the same level as the existing house floor.

The doors were removed which created an open plan walk-through from the existing kitchen.

Results

The sunroom took 4 weeks to complete. The build was constructed on time and within budget.

Because we installed four Fakro roof windows in the roof they gave great light back into the inside room in the house, these were fitted with blinds to allow the room to be used as a TV room on a sunny day. The client advises that the room inside is no darker than the original conservatory which had blinds on the ceiling.

The clients were delighted with the completed sunroom, they were happy that we met all their initial requirements, built the new room within the agreed budget and timescale and that we left their home perfectly clean and tidy.
They were particularly happy with the size and spaciousness of the new room and were looking forward to a room they could use all year round!
